Whilst many international hotel chains are based in Kuala Lumpur (KL), the new New World Petaling Jaya Hotel chose Petaling Jaya (PJ) – a bustling city west of KL – as its first hub in Malaysia. A brilliant move.

An efficient rail network already links PJ to the capital via the nearby Kelana Jaya LRT station (connected via a free shuttle service), and the hotel offers even greater convenience for guests on a shopping mission, since the popular Paradigm Mall, with 700,000 sq feet of retail space housing 300 outlets, is right at its doorstep.
This is a mall favoured by locals for its convenient location (with easy access to major highways), and its diverse array of trendy dining and entertainment spots. And, since the hotel is integrated within a complex that includes the mall, guests need not even venture out into the Malaysian heat for their shopping fix. Here you can find everything from playful, youthful fashion brands like Kitschen to more sophisticated names like G2000, catering to the corporate traveller looking to expand his or her wardrobe; home furnishing stores like Kaison and Akemi Uchi; an area dedicated to tech brands like Huawei and Samsung; and even an award-winning spa centre, Thai Odyssey, specialising in traditional Thai massage. It’s really all you need, under one roof.
To access the hotel, I rode the mall elevator up to the second floor, where I was greeted by a contemporary lobby with stylish chandeliers and lots of natural light. The hotel exudes a bold design aesthetic with materials like metal, marble, natural timber and bamboo, creating a sophisticated backdrop for Malaysian art.
Through the floor to ceiling windows in my 45 sq m executive premier guestroom on the 28th floor, I could take in stunning views of the sprawling city, and spy the Petronas Twin Towers rising along the KL skyline. Just like the rest of the hotel, in my room, the combination of local art and sleek furnishings created a warm vibe. And, the marble bathroom, with its bathtub and walk-in shower, was as spacious as the bedroom itself.
Food is quite an experience at New World. I had the pleasure of meeting Executive Chef Alexander Chong whose food philosophy revolves around the concept of a truly Malaysian kitchen. The buffet area Pasar Baru (Malay for ‘New Market’) showcased seven open cooking stations dedicated to Chinese, Malay and Indian delicacies, among others, and my local favourites were definitely the Hainanese chicken rice (a dish brought by early Chinese immigrants from Hainan in southern China, and featuring gingery poached chicken, with a rice flavoured using its stock, served with a chili and garlic sauce) and satay (skewered meat served with peanut sauce).
At the rooftop, guests can enjoy braised beef ribs and seared scallops at PJ Bar and Grill, or savour views of both PJ and KL from the infinity pool.
With such cool facilities and fantastic shopping options a mere hop, skip and a jump away, New World Petaling Jaya Hotel is an urban playground you’ll never want to leave.
