How does it feel to sit in an aircraft made of ice and snow? Now you can find out at Susukino Ice World in Sapporo’s largest entertainment district, one of the three sites of the Sapporo Snow Festival running from 5th to 12th of February 2018. The festival is Japan’s largest winter event, expected to attract 2 million visitors over the course of a week.
AirAsia Japan, AirAsia X and Thai AirAsia X have sponsored a 15-metre long illumination in the form of an aircraft. Illuminations, or light displays, are major crowd-drawers in Japan in the winter months. There are 60 other snow and ice sculptures in Susukino, and 141 more in Odori and Tsudome.
Though this plane never leaves the ground, you are free to take a seat and enjoy the tunnel of light. The nose of the aircraft is sculpted from large ice blocks, which are lit from the inside at night.
This is the first sponsorship for the event by the AirAsia Group, which currently operates flights from Sapporo (Shin-Chitose) to Nagoya and Kuala Lumpur. Direct flights from Sapporo to Bangkok will commence in April 2018.
Come to Susukino in the evening to see the sculptures and illuminations at their best. If you can’t make it to the festival this year, why not explore the northern island of Hokkaido this winter or book ahead for next year’s festival?
